TL;DR:

What is a matte laminate?
A matte laminate is a protective finish applied over your printed design. It gives your stickers a soft, non-reflective surface while protecting them from scratches, water, weather, and everyday wear.

Are matte stickers waterproof?
Yes. Matte laminated stickers are waterproof and durable enough for everyday use, both indoors and outdoors.

Are matte stickers UV protected?
Not quite. Matte laminate protects against moisture and scratches, but unlike glossy laminate, it isn’t UV protected. If your stickers will spend years in direct sunlight, glossy is the better option.

What’s the difference between matte and glossy stickers?
Glossy laminate creates a shiny finish that makes colors appear extra vibrant. Matte laminate reduces reflections and gives your stickers a softer, more understated look.

Who should choose matte stickers?
Anyone looking for a modern, premium finish. Matte is especially popular for branding, illustrations, product packaging, photography, and minimalist designs.

What is a matte laminate?

Before we talk about matte, let’s quickly talk about laminate. A laminate is the protective layer added on top of your printed design. It doesn’t just protect your sticker from wear and tear; it also changes how the finished sticker looks and feels.

Matte laminate gives your design a smooth, low-shine surface with a softer appearance than glossy. The colors stay rich, but without the reflections that come with a shiny finish.

The first thing you’ll probably notice isn’t even how it looks. It’s how it feels. Matte laminate has an incredibly smooth surface that’s almost soft as a rose petal, making every sticker feel just a little more premium the moment you pick it up.

What makes matte laminate popular

There’s a reason matte has become such a popular finish over the last few years. It complements almost any design without trying to steal the spotlight.

A softer look

Some finishes are all about making colors pop. Matte takes a different approach.

Its soft texture gives stickers a refined feel that’s particularly popular with artists, premium brands, and anyone aiming for a more minimal aesthetic. Sometimes less really is more.

Less glare

Glossy laminate reflects light. Matte absorbs much of it.

That means your artwork stays easy to see from almost any angle. Small details, illustrations, typography, and photography often benefit from the reduced reflections, especially in bright environments.

No fingerprints

If your stickers are handled a lot, matte has another advantage.

Fingerprints, smudges, and small marks tend to be much less visible compared to glossy laminate. That helps your stickers keep their clean appearance for longer, especially on darker designs.

Built to last

Choosing matte doesn’t mean sacrificing durability.

Matte laminate still protects your stickers against scratches, moisture, and everyday wear. The biggest difference is UV protection. Glossy laminate includes UV protection, while matte does not, making glossy the better choice for long-term exposure to direct sunlight.

Matte laminate on special materials

Matte laminate isn’t just available on vinyl. You can also pair it with transparent, holographic, and mirror materials to create completely different effects. On holographic stickers, the rainbow effect becomes softer and more subtle. Instead of bold flashes of color, you get a smoother shimmer that changes beautifully as the light moves across the surface.

On mirror stickers, matte creates an interesting contrast. The metallic finish is still there, but the reflections are toned down, giving the sticker a more muted, brushed-metal appearance.

And then there’s transparent stickers. Matte laminate transforms the transparent material into something entirely different. Printed areas take on a smooth, understated finish, while fully transparent areas develop an almost frosted glass effect.

Stickers vs labels

Matte isn’t limited to stickers. It’s also available for labels, but they serve different purposes.

Matte stickers

Stickers are all about visibility, creativity, and brand building. You’ll often find them on laptops, water bottles, cars, bikes, merch, or handed out at events and trade shows. They’re made to be noticed, shared, and hopefully stuck somewhere people will see them every day.

Matte labels

Labels, on the other hand, are designed to support the product. They’re commonly used on food packaging, cosmetics, candles, soap, and other retail products where clean branding and clear information go hand in hand. Matte labels are available on vinyl, clear, and metallic materials.

Ready to go matte?

If you’ve made it this far, I think it’s pretty obvious where I stand. I’m a huge fan of matte. It’s one of those finishes that doesn’t need to shout to make an impression.

That said, glossy still has its place. If your stickers are going to spend years baking in direct sunlight or you simply love that extra shine, glossy might be the better fit. But if you’re after something clean, modern, and just really satisfying to hold in your hand… matte is hard to beat.

And if you’re still on the fence, order a sample pack and compare them side by side. Fair warning though… matte has a habit of winning people over.
