How can I remove stickers without leaving residue?

Peel slowly from one edge, and warm older stickers with a hairdryer first. For clean removal, choose low-tack adhesive, as on Removable Stickers and Low-tack Vinyl. Permanent and hi-tack adhesives may leave residue.

Remove stickers without residue

How much residue a sticker leaves depends on the adhesive, how long it has been on and the conditions it has been in. Heat, sunlight and age make adhesive harder to remove cleanly.

Step by step

  • Peel slowly. Start at one edge and pull the sticker off slowly and at a low angle. This leaves less residue.

  • Use heat if needed. For stickers that have been on a long time, warm them with a hairdryer. The sticker becomes softer and easier to peel.

  • Clean off residue. Use window cleaner and a cloth. Rubbing alcohol, vinegar or a paste of baking soda and water also work on stubborn residue. Test on a small, hidden area first so you don't damage the surface.

  • Avoid sharp tools such as knives or blades, as they can scratch the surface.

Which adhesive removes most cleanly

  • Low-tack (removable). Made to peel off without residue from most surfaces. Used on Removable Stickers and Low-tack Vinyl, for temporary use or if you change stickers often.

  • Permanent. The industry standard with a long-lasting hold. It is not made for easy removal and may leave some residue.

  • Hi-tack. Our strongest adhesive, used on Hi-tack Vinyl and Heavy Duty Stickers. It is the hardest to remove and more likely to leave residue.

Residue from permanent and hi-tack adhesives can usually be cleaned off with the methods above. Read more about the differences between adhesives and adhesive residue in the Dictionary.
