How do I apply DTF heat transfers?

Use a heat press at 150°C (300°F) with medium pressure for 10 to 30 seconds, or an iron at 150 to 200°C (300 to 400°F) with firm, even pressure for 60 seconds on smaller designs. Wait a few seconds, then peel the film off sideways in one smooth motion.

Step 1: Position Your Design

Start with a flat, heat-safe surface. Place your transfer exactly where you want it. Alignment is key!

Step 2: Heat and Pressure

Heat press 10–30 seconds at 300–390°F (150–200°C), or iron 1 minute. Keep firm, even pressure.

Step 3: Pick and Peel

Wait about 10-15 seconds, then peel the film away sideways to reveal your masterpiece.

How to apply DTF heat transfers, step by step

A DTF Heat Transfer needs three things to bond well: steady heat, firm pressure and the right peeling technique.

1. Choose your heat source

  • Heat press (recommended): gives even heat and pressure, and the most durable, consistent result. Use it for larger or detailed designs.

  • Household iron: works for small projects. Only use it for designs no larger than the iron's surface.

2. Heat and time settings

The right settings depend on the fabric, the transfer and the conditions around you, so you may need to adjust them.

  • Heat press: 150°C (300°F), medium pressure, 10 to 30 seconds.

  • Iron: 150 to 200°C (300 to 400°F), firm and even pressure, 60 seconds with slow movements.

  • Heat-sensitive fabrics: a lower temperature of 110 to 130°C (230 to 265°F) and a slightly longer pressing time.

Materials and conditions vary, so test on a small area before you press the full design. Not sure about your fabric? See which fabrics DTF transfers work on.

3. Apply the transfer

  • Preheat the fabric for a few seconds so it's dry and free of wrinkles.

  • Place the transfer film on the fabric with the design facing up.

  • Heat press: press with medium pressure at the temperature and time above.

  • Iron: press firmly in one spot for a few seconds, then move slowly across the design to keep the heat even.

4. Peel the film

Wait a few seconds after pressing. Then roll or pull the film off sideways in one smooth motion, instead of lifting it straight up. This keeps the edges from lifting.

If the transfer doesn't stick fully, place a sheet of baking parchment over the design and heat it again for a few seconds at a moderate temperature.

Troubleshooting

  • The film is hard to remove: give it a few extra seconds to set before you peel.

  • The edges lift: increase the pressure or press the design again briefly.

  • Warm or cool peel: most transfers should be peeled warm, but some materials need a cool peel. See hot peel and cold peel in the Dictionary.

  • It still won't stick: check that the fabric suits DTF. Some coatings and finishes stop the adhesive from bonding.

Care after pressing

Wash the garment inside out at normal temperatures, and skip bleach and fabric softener. Tumble dry on low or hang dry. Don't iron directly on the transfer: put a cloth or baking parchment over it first. More in our care instructions for DTF transfers and the guide Create custom merch with DTF heat transfers.
