With our smooth and easy to use editor
A decal is a durable adhesive graphic made for a specific surface or place, such as a window, wall, vehicle, floor or sign. Decals often need more precise placement and longer durability than stickers. Multi-piece designs use transfer film to stay aligned.
According to the New Oxford Dictionary, a decal is "a design prepared on special paper for transfer onto another surface".
In the adhesive industry, a decal is defined by where it goes and how it performs, not by the design alone. Decals are made for a specific surface or environment, such as windows, walls, vehicles, doors, floors or signage. Placement, precision and durability matter, because a decal has to perform in real outdoor or commercial conditions. Decals can work as both decoration and functional graphics.
Printed decals
Printed decals are full-colour graphics that you apply in one piece, much like a large sticker: peel, position, apply. Typical examples:
Single large shapes
Graphics for windows, vehicles, doors, walls, floors or signage
Large printed designs applied like an oversized sticker
Transfer decals
A decal is applied with transfer film when the design can't be lifted and applied as one piece, for example:
Several cut pieces that must stay aligned
Detailed lettering
Spaced or separate shapes
Delicate or thin design elements
The transfer film lifts all pieces and keeps them aligned while you apply them, and you remove it afterwards. Transfer is an application method, not a separate product type.
In short
Stickers: peel and apply anywhere
Decals: place, align and apply on a specific surface, often with a tool such as a squeegee
Most decals go on like large stickers. Only multi-piece designs need transfer film.
Shopfront windows and commercial signage
Vehicle branding, fleet graphics and business logos
Wall decoration, murals and interior branding
Floor graphics, directional and informational signs
Equipment labelling and industrial use
Exhibitions and trade show displays
Decals are used indoors and outdoors wherever placement, environment and durability matter. See Wall Stickers, Floor Stickers and Window stickers.
Printed decals have the same basic layers as stickers, but with materials, finishes and adhesives built for larger surfaces, outdoor exposure and long-term use.
1. Finish (top layer)
The finish protects the print and affects durability and texture.
Glossy or matte laminate, both with UV protection
0.3 mm laminate for extra protection
Anti-slip (sandy) laminate for floor decals
Uncoated, for example wall decals for indoor use
2. Design (colour layer)
The printed artwork, in CMYK. White ink is used on transparent, metallic and speciality materials.
3. Material (base film)
The base film decides durability, flexibility and resistance to the environment. Our decals are printed on PVC (vinyl), which is more rigid and durable outdoors than the PET used for many stickers. PVC comes as calendered vinyl for standard use and cast vinyl for premium long-term use. Wall decals use a flexible polyester fabric.
The right material depends on:
Indoor or outdoor use
Surface type: smooth, textured or curved
How long the decal should last
How flexible it needs to be
4. Adhesive
The pressure-sensitive adhesive is chosen for the surface and conditions.
Permanent: the standard for decals
Hi-tack: for rough, textured or difficult surfaces
Low-tack (removable): for temporary walls, events and short-term installations
The adhesive often decides how well a decal performs outdoors or on unusual surfaces. Read more in How do the adhesives differ?
5. Backing liner
A paper or film layer that covers the adhesive until you apply the decal. It keeps the decal flat and stable during transport and installation.
Decals can be made in two ways, depending on the design. Both are decals, but they behave differently and suit different graphics.
Printed decals
Full-colour artwork printed as one piece on vinyl. They only need transfer film if the design has several separate cut shapes.
Strengths
Any colour, gradient, photo or detailed artwork
Textures, shadows, patterns and multi-colour graphics
Work well on smooth surfaces such as windows, doors, walls and vehicles
High outdoor durability when laminated
Limitations
The whole printed shape is one solid piece
Elements can't be separated without cutting them apart
Very large panels can be more complex to install
Use printed decals for
Full-colour graphics, illustrations, photos and multi-colour logos
Interior decoration such as wall decals and murals
Floor decals with anti-slip laminate
Cut vinyl decals (Vinyl Transfer)
Made from solid-colour vinyl, with no printed ink: the colour is the vinyl itself. Each piece is cut separately and the excess vinyl is removed, so cut vinyl decals always need transfer film. Our version is Vinyl Transfer.
Strengths
Very sharp edges
Very durable outdoors without laminate, especially cast vinyl
Great for lettering, logos, symbols and simple shapes
No background: only the vinyl shapes remain
Available in many vinyl colours
Limitations
Each shape is separate and needs transfer film
Not suitable for gradients, photos or complex artwork
Multi-colour designs need several layers
Use cut vinyl decals for
Shopfront lettering and opening hours on windows and doors
Vehicle logos and fleet branding
Signage icons, simple branding and single-colour symbols
Long-term outdoor use

Printed decals: full colour (CMYK), handle photos, gradients and detailed illustrations. One solid piece, highly durable when laminated. Transfer film only for multi-piece designs. Best for large graphics, murals and branding
Cut vinyl decals: solid-colour vinyl, one colour per layer, no background. Very durable, especially cast vinyl. Always applied with transfer film. Best for signage, logos and clean text
